Fightin’ crime, part 1

Woke up to gun shots this morning, which is a bit unnerving. It’s also not the first time I’ve heard gun shots around where I live but it is the closest they’ve sounded yet. Three disticnt pops shot me out of bed and to the window. Not knowing if I was about to see a neighbor of mine on the ground, I causiously open the blinds. Luckily, nothing of interest seemed to be outside. So I thought maybe I had dreamt it, until I noticed people looking out windows in the building next to me probably wondering the same thing. Then I saw a “suspicious” looking guy walking down the sidewalk.

I’ll go ahead and define suspicious as all black clothing, big jacket with hood and tucking something into his waistband on a foggy morning. Those are the red flags. I will also mention that it was a black male, and not because it weighed on my opinion, but only to paint the picture. It is very unfortunate that almost all of the crime in my neighborhood has been perpetrated by black males. Had the guy been white or any other race, I still would have felt uneasy.

I watched for a while. He was speaking with someone down the street. They were there for a good 15 minutes. Doing what looked more like loitering than anything else. Then two cops start rolling down the street and I walked out to greet one. Turns out they had received multiple phone calls of gun shots in the area, confirming my suspicion. I directed the cops straight to the two people on the sidewalk which they completely ignored. I’m baffled. The amount of crime in this area has gotten out of control. Police are essentially handcuffed by racial profiling rules preventing any unlawful and unwarranted search. I guess this also applies to a suspicious person report. The cops stated that it was a guy and a girl having an argument. Right. The guy with a gun and the girl holding a big bag, for what? Do they honestly think there is zero chance of the guy doing the mugging and the girl carrying the loot? I’m speculating here, but honestly, too many things add up. The cops shrugged it off and left.

I witnessed a neighbor robbed at knife point about a year ago, and this week, another neighbor of mine was robbed at gun point right in front of our building. That’s close. For people that have seen my apartment, it’s basically street level and on the sidewalk. Needless to say, my senses are hightened and if I see this guy again, I’ll set the cops on him, again.

I stumbled across this puzzle and it’s kind of driving me nuts. It’s a picture that represents a 10-digit number. The first 8 numbers are given as: 62284576xx. i can’t find the pattern. so i have no idea what the last 2 are. my thought is that it is some sort of abacus, but i’m not sure.

Can you figure out the remaining two? and if so, how did you arrive at your solution?

recently, my site was destroyed by some hackers. it was probably the most thorough hack job i’ve seen in quite some time. I spent a while trying to find the source, but just assumed it was an open hole in one of the third-party plugins I was using at the time. I had to do some hacking myself to get everything back to working order. The demo pages for my projects have suffered, however. Google has reported them as malware and i am currently in the process of getting that fixed.

Sorry for the inconvenience to to anyone trying to view them.

CheckAll has been added to the MooTools plugins. I’ll update the demo page as soon as I get some time. CheckAll is a small, simple class for MooTools 1.2 that sets the needed events for those “check all” boxes typically seen in tabled lists and in content management systems.
